Doing Your Work: The Key to Everything

This is the first of a multi-part series exploring key themes from our documentary This Sacred Earth.

All films evolve in the editing room, and on this particular Wednesday, This Sacred Earth was still in the throes of Mess, waiting for Structure to arrive. I was looking for the spine that everything would hang on.

Several of our wisdomkeepers, including Billie, had used the phrase, “Doing your work” when they were speaking, as in, “You have to do your work.” I turned to Billie and asked, what, exactly, did she mean by that.

She said, “Doing your work means clearing your emotional baggage and karma, so that you can live a lighter and more authentic life.  It also means you can evolve.  Because that’s what it’s all about.  It’s about evolution.”

The lightbulb went on.

Doing Your Work Ties Everything Together

“Doing your work” became the single most important idea of the documentary. It so neatly encapsulated everything we were trying to get across.  The need for forgiveness, the need to connect with nature, the need to develop a personal spirituality, the need to live more simply, the need to embrace change and to look forward to the changes that are coming – all this bundled nicely into that one simple idea.

It provided the key to the documentary.

But more than that, it is the key to a successful life.  If do your spiritual and emotional work, if you can live your life, as Billie says in the documentary, as a spiritual artform, then truly, there is no stopping you.

But you have to do the work.

So, how do you embody doing your work? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
